Our Building Process

Step 1: Free Consultation

The first step is to set up and participate in a free consultation with our owner and head craftsman, Austin Kirkland. In this phone call you will discuss what you are looking for and how a timber frame could be right for you!

Step 2: Design

If you decide to proceed with the process after a consultation you will then move to the design phase. This phase could be as simple as picking out a pre-designed kit, or it could be from scratch hand drawings made to fit your needs that will then be converted into engineered drawings. Once this process is completed the cutting of your structure can begin!

Step 3: Main Contract

Before cutting of your frame can begin a contract between yourself and Spotted Dog Timber Frames LLC, to do the cutting, raising, and potentially the finishing of the frame, will be signed. This document will lay out all the particulars of what you can expect during the actual building phase of the project, lock in your pricing, and detail the responsibilities of both parties. This may sound boring but it is a necessary step in a great working relationship!

Step 4: Cut

All the i's have been dotted and the t's crossed, now it's time to order the materials for your timber frame and hand cut the pieces. This part of the process can vary in time depending on the scope of your project but we promise it will be well worth the wait!

Step 5: Raise

There's nothing more thrilling than watching a pile of timbers become the bones of a structure in just a few days time. Like a giant puzzle your timber frame will be put together right before your eyes!

Step 6: Enjoy

Depending on your needs as outlined in the contract your frame will be completed for you to enjoy for your lifetime and the lifetimes of your decedents.

What IS Timberframing

Timber Framing is an ancient type of building that as seen in the picture above involves large timbers being joined with mortise and tenon joinery. This method of building came to America with influences from all over the world, there are even some structures built this way in northern Europe and Asia that are close to 1000 years old testifying to the quality and sturdiness of these buildings. Examples of famous Timber Frames include Jokhang Monastery in Lhasa, Tibet, the Globe Theater, and Westminster Abby . Modern building methods (balloon framing) are actually a relatively modern method of building brought about by industrialization as well as many other social and economic factors. It has been proven by time, however, that these buildings are not built to last and have a much shorter lifespan than traditional timber framing. This causes waste across the generations as the building materials used in these predominately 2"x4" framed homes is scrapped when the buildings inevitably decay. Of course anything made of wood will eventually decay but as mentioned in the above examples of longstanding timber frames, wood can last a lot longer than we think about in modern times, due to modern building methods we believe wood is just not given the ability to express it's full capabilities or its full beauty. You may think differently, but we firmly believe that between a 2"x4" framed wall and the big exposed timbers of ta timber frame the more beautiful option is obvious.

Who We are

My name is Austin Kirkland I am the owner, lead craftsman and Builder of Spotted Dog Timber Frames. I have over 15 years experience in the construction industry and am a third generation carpenter. I have a passion for building and history which naturally led me to become a timber framer since timber framing is a much more traditional and long lasting form of building. I want to create one of a kind structures whose quality and beauty will last for generations. This is a small company at this time and I'm joined in my endeavors by my wife Meagan and daughter Shiloh.

Our Values

1) Sustainability- I strive to find and use local materials in my frames, thus making building more Eco-friendly and economic. Many larger companies bring in their timber from the Northwest but the time and cost of this is unnecessary when we have such great building materials in our own backyards.

2)Value- The cost of building is rising but I strive to provide the best and most fair price for a timber frame that I am able.

3)Quality- Above all I strive to provide quality. Most of our projects are completely custom design/builds. This process can take some time but is worth it to make sure the product you are getting meets your expectations and will be built to the best standards we can achieve.
